Description
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Domperidone is a medication that increases muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract. This can help with symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, as well as discomfort caused by acid reflux. Domperidone is also used to prevent stomach problems caused by certain medications and to help with the emptying of the stomach in cases of gastroparesis.
Direction of Use: Pantoprazole is usually taken once a day before a meal, while domperidone is taken before meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a healthcare provider.
Contraindication: Pantoprazole is contraindicated in people with known hypersensitivity to the drug, and domperidone is contraindicated in people with severe liver or kidney disease, as well as those with a history of QT prolongation or other heart problems.
Doses and Administration: The recommended adult dose for pantoprazole is 40 mg once daily and for domperidone is 20mg up to three times a day. The healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dose for you.
Side Effects: Common side effects of pantoprazole include headache, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Common side effects of domperidone include headache, diarrhea, and dry mouth. More serious side effects include allergic reactions, such as rash, hives, and difficulty breathing, which require immediate medical attention.
Interactions: Both pantoprazole and domperidone may interact with other medications, such as blood thinners, birth control pills, and antibiotics. Therefore, it is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking before starting treatment with these medications.
Warnings and Precautions: Long-term use of PPI’s like pantoprazole may cause low levels of magnesium in the body, so people with kidney disease should use it with caution. Also, domperidone should be used with caution in people with a history of heart problems, as it may prolong the QT interval.
