Description
Linezolid is an antibiotic medication used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, and complicated skin and skin structure infections. It is also used to treat vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) infections.
Direction of Use: Linezolid is taken orally or intravenously, usually twice a day. The duration of treatment will depend on the type and severity of the infection being treated.
Contraindication: Linezolid should not be used in people who are allergic to linezolid or other antibiotics of the oxazolidinone class.
Doses and Administration: The usual adult oral dose is 600mg twice daily and the usual adult intravenous dose is 600mg every 12 hours. Doses may vary for children and for patients with kidney or liver disease.
Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and headache.
Interactions: Linezolid may interact with other medications, such as antidepressants, sympathomimetics, and tyramine-containing foods. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with linezolid.
Warnings and Precautions: Linezolid should be used with caution in patients with a history of bone marrow suppression or peripheral neuropathy. It may also increase the risk of serotonin syndrome when used with certain antidepressants. It is important to monitor blood counts, liver and kidney function tests regularly while taking linezolid. Long-term use of linezolid has been associated with the development of resistance and patients should be monitored for the emergence of resistant organisms. It is also not recommended to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting with a healthcare provider.
