Description
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a diuretic medication used to treat high blood pressure and edema (swelling) caused by various medical conditions.
Direction of Use:
Hydrochlorothiazide is usually taken orally once or twice a day, with or without food.
Contraindication:
Hydrochlorothiazide should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the medication or in patients with anuria (lack of urine production) or hyperkalemia (high potassium levels in the blood).
Doses and Administration:
The usual starting dose for adults is 12.5-25 mg once daily. Doses may be increased as needed and as tolerated.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of hydrochlorothiazide include low blood pressure, dizziness, and electrolyte imbalances such as low potassium levels.
Interactions:
Hydrochlorothiazide can interact with other medications such as lithium, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and also with some herbal supplements such as licorice. It is important to inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting Hydrochlorothiazide.
Warnings and Precautions:
Hydrochlorothiazide can cause dehydration, so it is important to drink plenty of water while taking the medication. It should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, gout, or kidney or liver disease. It should also be used with caution in elderly patients as they may be more sensitive to the side effects of the medication.
