Description
Finasteride 5mg is a medication used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men, also known as an enlarged prostate. It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is responsible for the growth of the prostate. Finasteride is also used for hair loss, it blocks the formation of DHT in the scalp, which is responsible for hair loss in men.
Direction of Use:
Finasteride 5mg is typically taken orally, once a day, with or without food.
Contraindications:
Finasteride is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to finasteride or any other component of the medication, and in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
Doses and Administration:
The usual adult dose is 5mg, once a day. The dose may be adjusted based on the patient’s response to the treatment.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and decreased semen volume. More serious side effects include breast tenderness and enlargement, allergic reactions, and testicular pain.
Interactions:
Finasteride may interact with other medications, such as blood thinners, certain antibiotics, and certain drugs used to treat HIV.
Warnings and Precautions:
Finasteride can cause birth defects if a woman is exposed to it during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets of finasteride. Finasteride should not be used in women or children.
It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you have any medical conditions or are taking any other medications before starting treatment with finasteride.
Patients should be advised to contact their healthcare provider if they experience any breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or other breast changes.
It is important to continue taking the medication even if you see improvement, as discontinuing the treatment may cause the symptoms to return.
