Description

Clindamycin is an antibiotic medication used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, including skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, and bone and joint infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Direction of Use:

Clindamycin is available in oral, topical, and intravenous forms. It is usually taken every 6-8 hours. It is recommended to take with a full glass of water and to avoid lying down for at least 10 minutes after taking the medication.

Contraindications:

Clindamycin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to clindamycin or other lincomycin derivatives, and in patients with a history of inflammatory bowel disease.

Doses and Administration:

The usual adult oral dose for mild to moderate infections is 150-300 mg every 6 hours. The intravenous dosage is 600-900 mg every 8 hours. The topical dosage is applied to the affected area(s) two to three times a day.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. More serious side effects can include allergic reactions, severe diarrhea, and Clostridium difficile colitis.

Interactions:

Clindamycin may interact with other medications, such as erythromycin, and may increase the risk of side effects. It also may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.

Warnings and Precautions:

Clindamycin should be used with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease. It is also important to inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of allergies, or if you are taking any other medications or have any other medical conditions. If you experience severe diarrhea or other signs of a serious allergic reaction, stop taking the medication and seek medical attention immediately.
