Description

Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine medication used to treat symptoms of allergic reactions such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, and hives. It also has some off-label uses such as treatment of migraines, insomnia and as an appetite stimulant

Direction of Use: Cyproheptadine is typically used to treat symptoms of allergic reactions, migraines, insomnia, and as an appetite stimulant. It can be taken orally.

Contraindication: It is contraindicated in individuals who have a known hypersensitivity to cyproheptadine or any of its components.

Doses and Administration: The usual adult dose for allergic reactions is 4mg every 6 to 8 hours. The usual adult dose for migraines is 12mg daily. The usual adult dose for insomnia is 4mg before bedtime.

Side Effects: Common side effects of cyproheptadine include drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and dizziness.

Interactions: Cyproheptadine may interact with other medications like MAO inhibitors, CNS depressants, and anticholinergic drugs. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking.

Warnings and Precautions: Cyproheptadine should be used with caution in individuals with glaucoma, urinary retention, or hypertension. It may cause drowsiness and should be used with caution while driving or operating heavy machinery. It should be used only when necessary during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Long-term use of cyproheptadine may lead to development of tachyphylaxis (decreased response to the drug with prolonged use)
