Description
Povidone-iodine is an antiseptic solution used to cleanse and disinfect the skin and mucous membranes. It is often used before and after surgical procedures, as well as for the treatment of minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.
Direction of Use: Povidone-iodine is usually applied topically to the affected area of skin or mucous membrane. The solution should be allowed to dry for at least 15 seconds before covering the area with a bandage or dressing.
Contraindication: Povidone-iodine is contraindicated in people with known hypersensitivity to iodine.
Doses and Administration: Povidone-iodine is available in various strengths and forms such as solution, ointment, and swabstick. It’s usually used in a concentration of 10% for topical use. The healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dose for you.
Side Effects: Common side effects of povidone-iodine include mild skin irritation, itching, or redness. More serious side effects, such as an allergic reaction, are rare.
Interactions: Povidone-iodine may interact with other topical medications, such as hydrocortisone or neomycin, so it’s important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are using before applying povidone-iodine.
Warnings and Precautions: Povidone-iodine should be used with caution in people with a history of thyroid disease or allergic reactions to iodine. It should not be used in the eyes, and it should be kept away from any open wound. It should not be used on premature infants or newborns, as well as on people with deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or severe burns.
