Description
Haloperidol is an antipsychotic medication used to treat conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe behavioral problems. It works by altering the levels of certain chemicals in the brain that can cause symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and agitation.
Direction of Use: Haloperidol is usually taken orally, with or without food, as directed by a healthcare provider. The tablets or liquid should be taken at the same time each day.
Contraindication: Haloperidol should not be used in people who have had an allergic reaction to it, or in people with severe central nervous system depression, severe cardiovascular disorders and comatose states.
Doses and Administration: The initial dose of haloperidol varies depending on the condition being treated, the severity of symptoms, and the individual’s response to the medication. The dose may be adjusted by the healthcare provider based on the individual’s response and tolerance.
Side Effects: Common side effects of haloperidol include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision. Long-term use of haloperidol can cause more serious side effects such as tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder characterized by involuntary movements of the face, tongue, and extremities.
Interactions: Haloperidol may interact with other medications such as antidepressants, antihistamines, and opioids. It can also interact with certain supplements such as vitamin D and calcium.
Warnings and Precautions: Long-term use of haloperidol can cause serious side effects and should be used with caution. It should also be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney disease, and in elderly patients, particularly in those with dementia. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid taking this medication.
