Description
Tinidazole is an antibiotic used to treat certain types of bacterial and parasitic infections. It is used to treat trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection), giardiasis (an infection of the intestine), and amebiasis (an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite).
Direction of use: Tinidazole is usually taken as a single dose or for 3 days. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take tinidazole exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Contraindication: Tinidazole is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to tinidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives.
Doses and Administration: The recommended adult oral dose is 2 grams given as a single dose. The recommended pediatric oral dose is 50 mg/kg/day given in a single dose or divided and administered twice a day for 3 days.
Side Effects: The most common side effects of tinidazole are nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and an upset stomach. These side effects usually go away within a few days.
Interactions: Tinidazole may interact with warfarin, cimetidine, and other drugs that are metabolized by the liver.
Warnings and Precautions: Tinidazole should be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney problems. It should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy or in nursing mothers. You should not drink alcohol while taking tinidazole or for at least 3 days after finishing the medication.
