Description

Drotaverine is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs called spasmolytics. It is used to relieve smooth muscle spasms, such as those that occur in the gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract. It works by inhibiting the actions of a chemical messenger in the body called phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), which helps to relax smooth muscle and reduce spasms.

Drotaverine is typically taken orally, usually 2-3 times a day, as directed by a healthcare provider. It can be taken with or without food.

Contraindications:

Drotaverine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to drotaverine or any other component of the medication, and in patients with severe renal impairment.

Doses and Administration:

The usual adult dose is 40-80 mg, 2-3 times daily, as directed by a healthcare provider. The dose may be adjusted based on the patient’s response to the treatment.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include nausea, dizziness, headache, and diarrhea. More serious side effects include allergic reactions and low blood pressure.

Interactions:

Drotaverine may interact with other medications, such as blood thinners and anti-arrhythmic drugs.

Warnings and Precautions:

Drotaverine should be used with caution in patients with a history of heart or blood pressure problems, and in patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you have any medical conditions or are taking any other medications before starting treatment with drotaverine. If you experience severe or prolonged side effects or if your condition worsens, stop using the medication and contact your healthcare provider.
