Description
Metformin HCL extended release tablets are used to treat type 2 diabetes. The medication works by decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver and absorbed by the stomach and intestines.
Direction of Use:
Take metformin HCL extended release tablets by mouth, usually once or twice daily with meals to decrease stomach upset. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Contraindication:
Do not use metformin HCL extended release tablets if you have kidney disease, a serious infection, or severe injury or if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis.
Doses and Administration:
Typical starting dose is one tablet of metformin HCL 1000mg extended release once daily. The dose may be increased by 500mg weekly or 1000mg every two weeks up to a maximum of 2000mg per day.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of metformin HCL extended release tablets include nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. More serious side effects include lactic acidosis and low blood sugar.
Interactions:
Metformin HCL extended release tablets may interact with certain antibiotics, heart or blood pressure medications, and oral contraceptives. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking before starting treatment with metformin HCL extended release tablets.
Warnings and Precautions:
Do not drink alcohol while taking metformin HCL extended release tablets, as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Also, inform your healthcare provider if you have any signs of kidney problems, such as a change in the amount of urine.
