Description
Empagliflozin is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It is used to treat type 2 diabetes by helping the body remove excess glucose through the urine.
Direction of Use:
Empagliflozin is usually taken orally, once daily. It should be taken with or without food, at the same time every day.
Contraindication:
Empagliflozin is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or diabetic ketoacidosis. It is also contraindicated in patients with a history of serious hypersensitivity to empagliflozin.
Doses and Administration:
The usual recommended starting dose for adults is 10mg orally once daily. The dosage may be increased to 25mg once daily based on the patient’s response to treatment and their blood sugar levels.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Empagliflozin include urinary tract infections, increased urination, genital infections, and increased thirst.
Interactions:
Empagliflozin may interact with certain medications such as diuretics, blood pressure medications, and insulin. It is important to inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting Empagliflozin.
Warnings and Precautions:
Empagliflozin may increase the risk of urinary tract infections and genital infections. Patients should be advised to drink plenty of water and contact their healthcare provider if they experience symptoms of a urinary tract infection such as pain or burning when urinating, or frequent urination. Empagliflozin may also cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, so it is important to monitor electrolyte levels when taking this medication. Patients with severe renal impairment should use this medication with caution. Also, it is not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes.
