Description

Febuxostat is a medication used to treat gout and hyperuricemia (elevated levels of uric acid in the blood). It works by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is responsible for producing uric acid.

Direction of use: Febuxostat is taken by mouth, usually once daily.

Contraindication: Febuxostat is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug, as well as in patients with severe liver impairment.

Doses and Administration: The recommended starting dose of Febuxostat is 40 mg once daily. Dosage may be adjusted based on the patient’s response and tolerance to the medication.

Side Effects: The most common side effects of Febuxostat include nausea, diarrhea, and headaches. Less common but more serious side effects include liver problems and heart problems.

Interactions: Febuxostat can interact with other medications such as allopurinol, probenecid, and azathioprine, which may increase the risk of side effects.

Warnings and Precautions: Febuxostat should be used with caution in patients with a history of liver or heart disease. It is important to have regular blood tests to monitor liver function while taking this medication. Patients should inform their healthcare professional of any symptoms of liver problems, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or abdominal pain.
