Description
Metformin HCL 1000mg Extended Release Tablet is an oral medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It helps to lower blood sugar levels by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and improving the body’s ability to use insulin.
Direction of Use: The medication is taken orally, typically once or twice a day with meals. The dosage may be gradually increased by the healthcare provider as needed.
Contraindication: Metformin should be avoided in case of renal impairment, acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, and hypersensitivity to metformin.
Doses and Administration: The typical starting dose is 500mg once or twice a day with meals, and can be increased by 500mg every week or two, up to a maximum of 2000mg per day, divided into two doses.
Side Effects: Common side effects include upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, and headaches. Less common side effects include muscle pain, weakness, and difficulty breathing.
Interactions: Metformin may interact with other medications, particularly those that affect blood sugar levels, such as insulin, sulfonylureas, and thiazolidinediones. Therefore, it is important to inform the healthcare provider about all medications being taken before starting treatment with metformin.
Warnings and Precautions: Metformin should be used with caution in patients with kidney or liver disease and those at risk of lactic acidosis. It is also important to inform the healthcare provider if any symptoms of lactic acidosis such as muscle pain or weakness, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, and feeling cold occur, as these may be signs of a serious condition.
