Description

Lactulose is a medication used to treat constipation and to lower ammonia levels in the blood in individuals with liver disease. It works by drawing water into the colon to soften the stool and stimulate bowel movements.

Direction of Use: Lactulose is usually taken orally, typically 2-3 times a day, with or without food. The dosage may be adjusted based on the individual’s response to the medication.

Contraindication: Lactulose should not be used by individuals with galactosemia, a rare genetic disorder that affects the metabolism of a sugar called galactose.

Doses and Administration: The usual adult dose of lactulose for constipation is 15-45ml (15-30g) daily, in 2-3 divided doses. The usual adult dose for reducing blood ammonia levels in liver disease is 30-50ml (30-50g) daily, in 2-3 divided doses.

Side Effects: Common side effects of lactulose include bloating, gas, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. These side effects are usually temporary and subside as your body adjusts to the medication.

Interactions: Lactulose may interact with other medications such as diuretics and laxatives. It is important to tell your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking before starting treatment with lactulose.

Warnings and Precautions: Lactulose may cause a false positive result in certain breath tests for sugar. It is important to inform your healthcare provider and any other healthcare professional who may be administering tests that you are taking lactulose. Additionally, lactulose should be used with caution in individuals with diabetes, as it may increase blood sugar levels.
