Description
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic medication used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.
Direction of Use: Levofloxacin is taken orally, usually once a day. The duration of treatment will depend on the type and severity of the infection being treated.
Contraindication: Levofloxacin should not be used in people who are allergic to levofloxacin or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, or in people who have a history of tendonitis or tendon rupture associated with the use of fluoroquinolones.
Doses and Administration: The usual adult dose is 250-750mg once daily, depending on the type and severity of the infection. Doses may vary for children and for patients with kidney or liver disease.
Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness.
Interactions: Levofloxacin may interact with other medications, including anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, and blood thinners. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with levofloxacin.
Warnings and Precautions: Levofloxacin may increase the risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, particularly in patients over 60 years of age, in patients taking corticosteroids, and in patients with kidney, heart or lung transplants. This medication should be used with caution in patients with a history of seizures or a history of or risk of developing a prolonged QT interval. It may also cause a change in the amount of glucose in the blood, so it is important to monitor blood glucose levels closely in diabetic patients.
