Description
Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation. It is used to treat conditions such as menstrual pain and pain caused by injuries or dental procedures. It works by reducing the production of certain chemicals in the body that cause pain and inflammation.
Direction of Use: Mefenamic acid is usually taken as directed by a healthcare provider, typically 2-3 times daily. It can be taken with or without food, but should be taken with a full glass of water to prevent stomach upset.
Contraindication: Mefenamic acid should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components, or in those with active peptic ulcer disease, severe liver or kidney disease, or bleeding disorders.
Doses and Administration: The usual adult dose of Mefenamic acid is 250-500mg every 6-8 hours as needed or as directed by a healthcare provider. The maximum daily dose is 1500mg.
Side Effects: Common side effects of Mefenamic acid include stomach upset, heartburn, nausea, and diarrhea. More serious side effects, such as bleeding from the stomach or intestines, kidney problems, or liver damage, are rare but may occur.
Interactions: Mefenamic acid may interact with other medications, including blood thinners, diuretics, and lithium. It may also increase the risk of stomach bleeding when used with alcohol or tobacco.
Warnings and Precautions: Long-term use of Mefenamic acid may increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. Patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or other risk factors for cardiovascular events. Also, you should be in regular contact with your healthcare provider while using Mefenamic acid.
