Description
Metformin Hydrochloride is an oral diabetes medicine that helps control blood sugar levels. It is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, either alone or in combination with other diabetes medications. Metformin Hydrochloride works by decreasing the amount of sugar your liver makes and that your stomach/intestines absorb. It also helps your body use insulin better.
Direction of use:
Take metformin hydrochloride by mouth, usually once or twice daily with meals as directed by your doctor.
Contraindication:
You should not use metformin hydrochloride if you have:
severe kidney disease
diabetic ketoacidosis (call your doctor for treatment with insulin)
if you are allergic to metformin hydrochloride
Doses and Administration:
The recommended starting dose is 500 mg once or twice daily, with the maximum dose is 2550 mg/day.
Side Effects:
Nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, constipation
Lactic acidosis (a buildup of lactic acid in the body)
Headache
Weakness
Muscle pain
Interactions:
Alcohol can increase the risk of lactic acidosis
Taking certain other medications may also increase the risk of lactic acidosis
Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using.
Warnings and Precautions:
If you have severe kidney disease, your body may not be able to process this medicine properly.
Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious side effect of metformin hydrochloride.
You should also be aware of symptoms of low blood sugar and know how to treat it.
