Description
A pulse oximeter is a medical device that is used to measure the saturation of oxygen in the blood (SpO2) and the heart rate (pulse rate). The device is commonly used to monitor patients with respiratory and cardiac conditions, such as asthma, emphysema, and heart failure, as well as people with anemia and sleep apnea, who may have difficulty breathing at night.
The device typically consists of a sensor that is placed on a finger, toe, or earlobe. The sensor emits two wavelengths of light, one red and one infrared, which pass through the skin and are absorbed by the blood. The device then uses the absorption of these wavelengths of light to calculate the oxygen saturation of the blood. The device also uses a sensor to detect the pulse rate of the patient.
