Description

Losartan Potassium is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement of the heart’s main pumping chamber).

Direction of Use:

Losartan Potassium is usually taken orally once a day, with or without food.

Contraindication:

Losartan Potassium should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the medication or in patients with anuria (lack of urine production) or hyperkalemia (high potassium levels in the blood).

Doses and Administration:

The usual starting dose for adults is 50 mg once daily. Doses may be increased as needed and as tolerated.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Losartan Potassium include dizziness, headache, and diarrhea.

Interactions:

Losartan Potassium can interact with other medications such as lithium, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and also with some herbal supplements such as licorice. It is important to inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting Losartan Potassium.

Warnings and Precautions:

Losartan Potassium can cause electrolyte imbalances, so it is important to have regular blood tests to monitor potassium levels. It should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, gout, or kidney or liver disease. It should also be used with caution in elderly patients as they may be more sensitive to the side effects of the medication.
