Description
Sildenafil is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow into the area and cause an erection.
Direction of Use:
Sildenafil is taken as needed, about 1 hour before sexual activity. It should be taken on an empty stomach or after a light meal. Do not take more than one dose within 24 hours.
Contraindications:
Sildenafil is contraindicated in patients taking nitrates, as the combination can cause a sudden and dangerous drop in blood pressure. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe liver or kidney disease.
Doses and Administration:
The usual starting dose for Sildenafil is 50 mg, taken as needed about 1 hour before sexual activity. The maximum recommended dose is 100 mg. Doses may be adjusted based on individual response and tolerance.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Sildenafil include headache, flushing, upset stomach, and visual changes such as changes in color perception.
Interactions:
Sildenafil can interact with certain medications, including nitrates, alpha-blockers, and blood pressure medications. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are currently taking before starting treatment with Sildenafil.
Warnings and Precautions:
Sildenafil can cause serious side effects, including sudden vision loss in one or both eyes. Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes can be a sign of a serious eye problem called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). If you have sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, stop taking Sildenafil and call a healthcare provider right away.
