Description

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant medication used to treat depression, chronic pain, and other conditions.

Direction of Use: Amitriptyline is taken orally, usually once a day at bedtime. The duration of treatment will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the medication.

Contraindication: Amitriptyline should not be used in people who are allergic to the medication or have a history of heart attack, stroke, or severe heart disease. It should also be avoided in people with a history of glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or urinary retention.

Doses and Administration: The usual adult starting dose is 25-50mg at bedtime, which can be increased gradually over time as needed. Doses may vary for older adults or people with liver or kidney disease.

Side Effects: Common side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, constipation, and blurred vision.

Interactions: Amitriptyline may interact with other medications, including antihistamines, blood pressure medications, and painkillers. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with amitriptyline.

Warnings and Precautions: Amitriptyline may increase the risk of suicide in people under the age of 24. It may also cause drowsiness or dizziness, so it is important to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until the effects of the medication are known. It may also cause changes in blood pressure and heart rate, so it is important to monitor these closely. It should be used with caution in people with a history of seizures or a history of or risk of developing a prolonged QT interval. It may also cause a change in the amount of glucose in the blood, so it is important to monitor blood glucose levels closely in diabetic patients.
