Description
Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a medication used to dissolve gallstones and to treat liver diseases such as primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
Direction of Use: UDCA is typically taken by mouth, usually twice a day with meals.
Contraindication: UDCA should not be used in patients with bile duct obstruction or in patients who are allergic to the medication.
Doses and Administration: The usual dose for dissolving gallstones is 13-15 mg/kg/day, while the dose for treating liver disease is typically 8-10 mg/kg/day.
Side Effects: UDCA is generally well-tolerated, but some patients may experience side effects such as abdominal discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, and muscle pain.
Interactions: UDCA may interact with certain medications, such as warfarin and statins, so it is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking before starting treatment with UDCA.
Warnings and Precautions: UDCA should not be used in patients with bile duct obstruction or in patients who are allergic to the medication. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of liver disease or in patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
